How to celebrate becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah independently of a community.
When a young Jewish person becomes a Jewish adult, it is a time of real celebration. It is usually at age 13, but some girls celebrate this rite of passage at the age of 12. It is a very meaningful time, when young people consider their heritage and what is important to them in life. For families who do not belong to a synagogue community, Bar or Bat Mitzvah can seem impossible. But it is absolutely possible, and can be really lovely to celebrate in a unique way.
I work closely with the young person and their family to prepare them for the event. We study together, and we create a ceremony which fits with them and who they are, their beliefs and their life style. Becoming a Jewish adult is both celebratory and weighty, and deserves to be marked in a way appropriate to them.
If you have a child coming up for Bar or Bat Mitzvah, and you don't belong to a synagogue, please contact me lee@leewax.com for a conversation about what might be possible. Mazeltov!
"It was an absolutely lovely ceremony last night and many of our friends, both Jewish and not, remarked on how special it was. Thank you again for helping Lulu on this journey and we look forward to seeing you again when Biba comes of age!" David Betteridge, September 2015
"Your lessons have been invaluable in helping Biba discover a real sense of her Jewish identity. We've seen her blossom in every way this year, due in no small part to her Batmitzvah journey with you." Shirley Lixenberg
